PTFE Glass-Molly (15/5)

Polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE) is one of the most popular materials for making seals and gaskets. It is a fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene comprising fluorine and carbon. Glass-filled PTFE is a variant of PTFE filled with glass-reinforced fibers. This reinforcement percentage may vary between 5% and 40%. The glass-filled variants have gained immense popularity in recent years due to their improved wear and compression properties. PTFE glass-molly 15/5 is one of the most popular types of glass-filled PTFE used for creating various sealing solutions. It is basically a glass-filled PTFE with molybdenum disulfide (MOS2) and glass fibers.

SSP Seals provides PTFE glass-molly 15/5 sealing solutions that are widely used across industries in applications where they may be exposed to challenging environments such as extreme temperatures, pressures, and so on. Glass filling in PTFE adds to its strength and increases shelf life. The seals made of PTFE glass-molly 15/5 are abrasive and are not recommended to use on low hard value shafts.

Our experts have been helping clients to take advantage of this material for various sealing applications. All these years, we have designed and delivered several sealing solutions in custom specifications using this material.

Mechanical, Chemical, and Thermal Properties of PTFE Glass- Molly 15/5

The following properties of PTFE glass/molly 15/5 make them a suitable choice for sealing solutions.

  • This PTFE variant can easily resist almost all chemicals. However, it cannot resist elemental fluorine, molten alkali metals, CF3, and halogenids, which are strong oxidizing chemicals.
  • The material possesses good physical properties and has a better creeping behavior than regular virgin PTFE.
  • PTFE glass-molly 15/5 exhibits less deformation under loads at extreme temperatures. This improves its utility as a medium of sealing.
  • This PTFE variant comprises 80% virgin PTFE, 15% glass, and 5% molybdenum disulfide material, which helps reduce friction and steady-state wear.
  • All these properties of PTFE glass – molly 15/5 makes it an ideal choice for designing piston rings, valve seats, shaft seals, and sealing elements.
